At UC Merced, many of us have compliance responsibilities embedded in our day-to-day work. Even if you are not in a position with a specific compliance function, all employees share a responsibility to uphold the highest standards of ethics and compliance with laws, regulations, and policies.
Compliance is more than simply following rules—it’s about doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. When we act ethically and in accordance with policy, we help protect our colleagues, our students, and the University’s ability to fulfill its mission. Each of us plays a part in fostering a workplace where honesty, fairness, and accountability are valued and expected.
By committing to ethical practices, we contribute to a culture of trust and accountability. This ultimately enhances not only institutional success, but your individual success at UC Merced.
When we contribute to an ethical culture:
- We protect ourselves, our colleagues, and the University
- We maintain the public’s trust in our work and our mission, and
- We create a culture where people feel respected, safe, and empowered to do the right thing
- We ensure that decisions are made with integrity, transparency, and fairness
When each of us commits to ethical practices, we create an ethical culture as a way of life at UC Merced.
Tomorrow’s article is about how the Ethics and Compliance Office works with the campus community to make this happen. Don’t miss it!
