November 5, 2019

Each day during UC Merced’s Ethics and Compliance Week (November 4-8, 2019), we publish a daily Compliance Quick Topic and quiz question. The quiz for this topic has already expired, but look out for today's topic!

Compliance Quick Topic - Clery

Have you ever heard of the Clery Act?  Do you work with students on a regular or consistent basis?

Clery is a federal law that requires colleges and universities across the United States that receive Title IV financial aid funding to:

  • disclose information about particular crimes on and around their campuses;
  • develop campus security and reporting procedures; and
  • provide safety and crime information and policies to members of the campus community.

Campuses are required to:

  • appoint a coordinator;
  • identify and train Campus Security Authorities (CSAs);
  • publish an Annual Security Report (ASR) and Annual Fire Safety Report (AFSR) by October 1 each year; and
  • issue timely warnings and emergency notifications.

Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) are individuals at the University who play a vital role in maintaining safety within the campus community and are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act crimes that are reported to them in their capacity as a CSA.  CSAs are not responsible for investigating or reporting incidents that they learn about in an indirect manner. Individuals that are designated as CSAs include:

  • Those who have significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline, RAs and campus judicial proceedings.
  • Campus police department.
  • Individuals responsible for campus security other than campus police, such as security at parking kiosks, event security, or student escorts.
  • A person or office designated by our location as someone to whom crimes should be reported.

Additional Clery information and reports can be found on the UC Merced Police Department Website.
